Playful’s Sixth Birthday

This month marks six years since Matthew Byam Shaw, Nia Janis and Nick Salmon formed the company in 2010.

In the past six years, Playful Productions has enjoyed a great deal of success and 2015 alone saw a roster of shows that Playful either produces or general manages in the UK selling a staggering £140 million worth of tickets.

Both Wicked and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory have continued their success in the West End with Wicked winning the 2015 Olivier Audience Award.

The UK premiere of Kinky Boots with a book by Harvey Fierstein and music and lyrics by pop icon Cyndi Lauper opened in September to critical and audience success. Time Out called it “Dazzling, fabulously sassy and uplifting” and it has gone on to win multiple awards, including the 2016 Olivier award for Best New Musical.

We also had three successful plays run in the West End over the past year. American Buffalo starring Damien Lewis, John Goodman and Tom Sturridge at Wyndham’s Theatre, a new production of The Audience starring Kristin Scott Thomas at the Apollo Theatre and Hangmen starring David Morrissey, Johnny Flynn and Andy Nyman at the Wyndham’s, which won the 2016 Oliver award for Best New Play.
